Gambling Bill Dead

Without any doubt about it; three more casinos won’t appear in Massachusetts. Deval Patrick, Governor introduced the bill but the house 108 to 46 rejected it. In accordance with analysts, the House voted that way because of political maneuvering in the government of the state and nothing else. Deval Patrick was defeated in his first main legislative battle.

The rejected bill concerned the permission to built new three casinos and resorts in Massachusetts as well legalizing online gambling. Salvatore DiMasi, the state’s speaker, was the main opponent to the mentioned bill and fought for the bill rejection. He thought that the gambling establishments’ social costs were shaking more significant than the possible revenue that the casinos would have brought the state. He thought that to create jobs better ways could be found. ?? was sure that, the state’s citizens won a main battle by rejecting this bill.

Earlier a committee reviewed the above mentioned bill and recommended to reject the bill. Governor Deval Patrick, considering that the House would follow that recommendation, went to New York without any explanation. However his staff asserts that he’s the House and Senate leadership supportive and wants to work with them in order to develop some new economic initiatives. Analysts think Patrick, however, waited too much to lobby the bill support from the local politicians and unions of the state, a freshman politician mistake.

The mentioned bill became a power struggle between Patrick and DiMasi. The failure of the bill can wind up a problem for Salvatore DiMasi. There is a USD1.3 billion deficit in the in state’s budget of this year and DiMasi could be seriously criticized because of opposing the gambling bill since the state’s economy is falling apart. Tax revenue from the casinos easily could have brought more than USD400 million and the casinos could have provided twenty thousand permanent jobs. But to common surprise, the defeat of the bill is considered by David Flynn, Representative to be the way to push the proposition of adding about two thousand five hundred slot machines to the racetracks of the state instead of the 3 casinos.
